2022 Hummer EV
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is an upcoming luxury electric vehicle manufactured by GMC and its own sub-brand. The 2022 Hummer EV sub-brand includes a pickup truck (SUT) and an approved Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), launched in October 2020 via live stream. GMC Hummer EV has its roots in the discontinued Hummer brand of General Motors. The Hummer brand itself was created by AM General, a manufacturer of light military vehicle HUMVEE. AM General created a civilian version of the HUMVEE and renamed it the Hummer.
In December 1999, AM sold the General Hummer brand to General Motors, but AM General continued to manufacture cars, while GM was responsible for the marketing and distribution of all civilian Hummers manufactured by AM General. Soon after, GM introduced its two Hummer H2 and Hummer H3 design models and changed the original vehicle to the Hummer H1. AM General continued to build the H1 until it was discontinued in 2006, and was contracted by GM to produce the Hummer H2.
By 2006, the Hummer was exported and sold through importers and distributors in 33 countries. On October 10, 2006, GM began production of the Hummer H3 at the Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa for international markets. Originally built there, the Hummers were only left-handed, but right-hand versions were added and exported to Australia and other markets. On June 1, 2009, as part of General Motors’ bankruptcy announcement, the company announced that it would discontinue production of the Hummer brand.
