The 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 is a four-door coupe manufactured by Mercedes-AMG. The 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 comes with a silky, turbocharged, 429-hp in-line six-cylinder engine and is paired with a smart automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The Mercedes CLS53 is mechanically almost identical to the Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan, with its racer-style rear seat and trunk-free layout. It also has a voice-activated assistant and innovative options. The second includes navigation with augmented reality, which embeds guidance and other real-time information into a live video stream of the road ahead shown on the screen. Inside, the all main screens are digital, including the 12.3-inch instrument cluster, but there’s a warmth in the cockpit of this four-door coupe that rivals can’t quite match. At the rear, the Mercedes-AMG CLS53 feels more like a sedan than a coupe, with transverse triple seating and a folding rear seat split into 40/20/40. However, the sloping roofline reduces headroom for adults. The luggage capacity is just 12 cubic feet. Mercedes has the ability to integrate cutting-edge technology into its interior while maintaining the old-world opulence everyone expects from a luxury sedan from the brand. This is also the case with the CLS53. The 2023 CLS53 features the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) display, which adds a voice-activated assistant and numerous input methods. It can be switched via a large touch panel in the center console, as well as the touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel and the center touchscreen. Options include a head-up display and a Burmester surround sound system.

The Mercedes-AMG CLS53 comes with a turbocharged and electrically supercharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid assist system called EQ Boost, nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The engine is rated at 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, and EQ Boost adds up to 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. The CLS53 we tested hit 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds and covered the quarter mile at 111 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds. The inline-six is characteristic and willing to rev, and the nine gears provide fast upshifts and satisfying downshifts. The AMG CLS53 is equipped with air suspension and adaptive shock absorbers as standard. This setup provides solid handling and an acceptable ride on most roads, but the CLS loses its composure on bumps and can feel fragile on uneven pavement. The similar E53 has slightly smoother tuning and as a result, offers a more harmonious ride. According to the EPA, the Mercedes-AMG CLS53 is gaing for 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The CLS53 has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
