The i4 is one of the first BMWs to include the company’s infotainment and connectivity software called iDrive 8. The i4 is upgraded to a newer version, iDrive 8.5. The system operates via a 14.9-inch touchscreen integrated with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel on the huge curved display on the dashboard. In addition to the rotary controller on the center console, the system offers advanced voice commands and numerous popular features. These include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspots.

The EPA gives the single-motor rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40 an estimated 301 miles of driving on a fully charged battery. The 396-horsepower all-wheel-drive xDrive40 gets an estimated driving range of 307 miles when standard 18-inch wheels are installed, or 282 miles when optional 19-inch wheels are installed.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive M50 also has the same 81.5 kWh battery, but its claimed range tops out at 245 miles. These i4 models have a 200 kW charging capacity that can cover 88 to 108 miles in just 10 minutes. The entry-level eDrive35 model comes with a smaller battery with a net capacity of 66.0 kWh, which is said to provide a range of approximately 260 miles and max out at 180 kW charging speeds. Using its Level 2 (up to 11 kW) onboard charger, the i4 can charge its battery from zero to 100 percent in less than 8 hours.
The most efficient i4 model, according to the EPA, is the eDrive40 with standard 18-inch wheels, this model scored 109 MPGe city and 108 MPGe highway.
