Dodge reduced the number of available in 2-trims SE Value and Crossroad. The cutbacks are the lack of all-wheel drive and the optional V-6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The only powertrain available is the old 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, now paired with a four-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Dodge is also streamlining the option selection process with the introduction of the Popular Equipment Group, which bundles many features depending on trim level.

The 2024 Journey SE Value trim includes a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, Uconnect with Voice Command and Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, tri-zone climate control, security alarm, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. The Crossroad’s Popular Equipment Group adds a universal garage door opener, remote start, heated front seats and steering wheel, navigation, and a six-speaker audio system with a subwoofer.

Inside, the Journey’s interior is far from luxurious, and simple controls are user-friendly. Cheap-feeling parts like the plastic shifter and hollow-sounding interior door trim panels are terrible, especially on the most expensive version. Many luxury features such as an electrically adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are noteworthy because they are not included in the options list. Although every model has an easy-to-use touchscreen, the system has fewer features than many other Dodge products. Likewise, the larger screen is responsive but we wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were offered here. There’s also only a single USB port on the front. Not so good for the device-happy new generation that is likely to live in the back seats.

Convenience is one of the few areas where the Journey shines, the interior is easily configured, and there’s tons of small storage space for odds and ends, even if overall cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals. You can fold down the 50/50-split third row and the 60/40-split second row to expand available cargo space, but the Journey offers the least overall cargo space among vehicles in this class. In addition to the expected bins in and around the console, there’s also a sizeable bin under the front passenger seat cushion, as well as two large underfloor bins in the second row. Dodge Journey has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats. There’s a lower anchor point and an anchor point on the second-row middle seat, as well as the ability to borrow a lower anchor point from the passenger-side seat, the third row has no rope.

Dodge Journey SE and Crossroad trims come with a low-power four-cylinder engine which is best avoided, but you can’t do that because the V-6 is no longer offered. The 172-horsepower engine is woefully underpowered, and its real-world performance is further dulled by a four-speed automatic transmission that’s reluctant to downshift. The four-cylinder engine has the worst EPA rating among competitors with similar powertrains; 19 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the Honda CR-V is rated at 26 cities and 32 mpg highway, while the 2019 Toyota C-HR is rated 27/31.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Dodge Journey its highest rating of Good in four crash tests and its lowest rating of Poor in the driver-side small front overlap test.
