2024 Dodge Hornet RT Plus

The plug-in hybrid R/T model joins the lineup this year with a 288-horsepower powertrain that’s expected to provide an electric-only driving range of more than 30 miles. The 2025 Hornet GT comes with many desirable standard features, including a large 10.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch aluminum wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The Hornet’s cabin is similar to Alfa Romeo, roomy for drivers in the front seat and narrow for those in the back seat. The main controls and infotainment system are tilted slightly towards the driver, and there is a tall gear lever for the automatic transmission positioned on the center console. The Hornet also uses the same steering wheel as the Alfa Romeo, but with the Dodge logo in the middle and an integrated ignition switch under the left spoke. Black upholstery with red stitching is standard, and the GT Plus trim comes with leather; Those ordered with the optional Track package receive faux suede, and an optional red leather interior option is also available.

All models come with a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital display screen. The software interface is the latest Uconnect 5 system used in other Stellantis models such as the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Ram 1500 pickup truck. Upgrading to the GT Plus swaps out the 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo for the standard system and adds a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Hornet GT 2025 models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 268 horsepower and comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. The R/T model is Dodge’s first plug-in hybrid and is powered by a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a 288-horsepower electric motor. Instead of the GT’s nine-speed automatic transmission, the R/T has a six-speed automatic transmission but still comes standard with all-wheel drive. The powertrain can temporarily increase output by as much as 30 horsepower through a feature called PowerShot, which is activated by pulling either paddle shift lever. With PowerShot mode engaged, the Hornet R/T Plus PHEV hit 60 mph at our test track in 5.5 seconds, matching the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s time in the same test.

Handling is confident and borders on sporty, but it’s not as athletic or satisfying as rivals like Mazda or Volkswagen. The plug-in Hornet hybrid R/T model comes with a 12.0 kWh battery pack rated for 33 miles of electric driving per charge. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, we managed to get 31 miles before the Hornet’s gas engine started to pick up the slack. Charging time on a Level 2 charger is approximately two and a half hours. The EPA estimates the Hornet GT is good for 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid R/T model is rated at 29 mpg combined, or 77 MPGe combined, when the electric range of the onboard battery pack is taken into account.
