Finally, there’s the Escape PHEV with a plug-in version of the hybrid engine. It has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that delivers a total of 210 horsepower. The 2025 Escape is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive is standard. Unlike the gas-only and regular hybrid Escape models, the Escape Plug-in Hybrid does not offer all-wheel drive.

The 2025 Escape Plug-in can travel approximately 37 miles on electric power with a fully charged battery and then switches to normal gas-electric hybrid operation. Charging the 14.4 kWh battery pack takes 3.5 hours using a Level 2 charger and 10-11 hours using a 110-volt household outlet. Size-wise, the Escape sits below the Ford Explorer and between the Ford EcoSport and the Ford Edge. The Hybrid was Ford’s first hybrid electric vehicle and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The 2025 Escape’s cabin is stylishly designed and spacious for both front and rear seat occupants. Although there are some lower-priced plastic panels on lower trims, the Escape’s ST-Line and Platinum models look and feel more premium, but still don’t match the best-dressed interior in the segment belonging to the Mazda CX-5. , Mazda CX-50, Kia Sportage and Honda CR-V. Both displays run Ford’s latest Sync 4 infotainment interface and offer wireless Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto. The system accepts over-the-air updates, and Ford says the Escape will automatically update itself so the owner won’t have to worry about using an outdated version of the software. A 10-speaker B&O Play audio system, instrument cluster navigation, a pop-up head-up display, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display are all optional features.

Ford offer offers two engine options for the Ford Escape, a base 180-horsepower turbo-triple engine that provides decent power and adequate acceleration, but it won’t add any excitement to your ride and can also be a bit noisy at high speeds. The Escape with the base engine and front-wheel drive gets 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Adding all-wheel drive drops those estimates to 26/32 mpg city/highway. Models with the more powerful turbo-four engine and all-wheel drive achieve 23/31 mpg city/highway.
