2023 BMW i3
The 2023 BMW i3 is a high-roof hatchback manufactured and marketed by BMW with a rear-wheel drive electric powertrain and optional range-extending petrol engine via a single-speed transmission and an under-floor lithium-ion battery pack. The BMW i3 was BMW’s first mass-produced zero-emissions vehicle, and BMW’s electric vehicle was launched as part of the BMW-i sub-brand.
The 2023 BMW i3 is a small four-door hatchback that comes as standard with an all-electric powertrain. It’s available in two trim options, the basic i3, and the slightly sportier i3s. Both come with a Range Extender that uses a small two-cylinder gasoline generator and a 2.3-gallon tank to keep you going when the main battery is discharged. All four versions have a 42 kWh battery, which is good for a range of 153 miles in the electric-only version or 126 miles in the Range Extender model. BMW says the last option can go up to 200 miles with the fuel generator on.
The EV movement is gaining momentum and the future of the BMW i3 is in question as BMW prepares more competitive models like the upcoming BMW i4 sedan and iX SUV. The i3’s design strikes a chord and the limited driving range fits your lifestyle, 2023 may be your last chance to park a new one in your driveway. The i3s will be more fun to drive, but we’ll stick with the most affordable model. It’s would have preferred the Giga World package, even though it had few options other than exterior and interior colors. In addition to the unique brown leather and gray fabric upholstery, it includes Apple CarPlay compatibility, heated front seats, and navigation.
2023 BMW i3 : Interior
The 2021 i3 has the exterior dimensions of a compact city car, making it perfect for speeding through traffic and shapeshifting in teeny parking lots, but rear seat passengers suffer due to the small size. The BMW i3 interior is beautifully crafted with intriguing recycled materials, and the cabin has an open, airy appeal, but those who spend time in the cramped back seat won’t be as happy as those in the front.
There are no pillars separating the front and rear doors, creating a large, open space that facilitates rear entry. With the rear seats folded and lowered easily using a strap in the car, we fit 14 pieces of hand luggage inside. Apple CarPlay integration is standard, but Android Auto compatibility is not offered. The car also lacks power points, with a single USB port located in the front center console.
2023 BMW i3 : Engine
BMW i3 rated with an all-electric driving range of 153 miles, the i3’s 42.2 kWh battery pack pales in comparison to the Chevrolet Bolt EV‘s 60.0 kWh battery and an EPA rating of 259 miles. Likewise, the Model 3 can travel 353 miles with its largest battery. Still, only the i3 has an optional, gasoline-powered range-extension generator that fires when the battery drops to a 5 percent charge state. The all-electric i3s we tested achieved 102 MPGe on our highway fuel economy route, matching the EPA rating.
2023 BMW i3 : Safety
The Insurance Institute for Road Safety awarded the BMW i3 the highest grade of Good in four of the five crash test categories and the second highest grade of Acceptable in head restraints and seat testing. The BMW i3 received an intermediate Advanced rating for vehicle-to-vehicle forward collision avoidance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not evaluate the BMW i3. The 2023 BMW i3 standard advanced safety features include Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, rear-view camera, collision warning, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic braking, high-beam headlights, adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and parallel and vertical parking assistance.
