2025 Hyundai Nexo
The 2025 Hyundai Nexo is a hydrogen fuel cell-powered crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The Hyundai Nexo is the flagship of Hyundai’s “eco-car” portfolio and was launched to replace the Hyundai Tucson FCEV. The Nexo is an expensive and boring but environmentally friendly vehicle that’s only available in California and is only practical in and around Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Hyundai Nexo is a five-passenger, front-wheel-drive crossover SUV available in Blue and Limited trims. Both the Blue and Limited trims feature a new activated carbon filter and HVAC software logic to help reduce cabin odors.
The base Blue trim comes with features like navigation, a digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment, and assistive technologies like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision avoidance. The Limited adds a heated steering wheel, ventilated seats, an extra-wide sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate, Hyundai’s blind-spot view monitor, a 360-degree camera, a remote parking feature, and an upgraded Krell audio system. In our opinion, the amenities justify the extra cost for the Limited, though the Nexo Limited’s range is 354 miles compared to the Nexo Blue’s 380 miles.
2025 Hyundai Nexo : Interior
The Nexo comes with a luxurious, high-tech interior, and with seating for five passengers, the 2023 Hyundai Nexo is on par with other compact crossovers. Adults fit comfortably in the front or back, there are 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, and folding the rear seats flat expands cargo space to 57 cubic feet. The front seats offer only basic power adjustments and are upholstered in vinyl upholstery.
The controls are equally simple but high-tech and efficient. There are digital gauges and a large display for the infotainment system, along with push-button controls for the transmission and HVAC. Overall, the Nexo cabin is a pleasantly simple and airy place, especially with the Limited’s larger sunroof. A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment interface compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on the Nexo. Hyundai’s Blue Link app offers even more digital features like remote engine start, remote car finder, and hydrogen fueling station finder. Blue Link is free for the first three years.
2025 Hyundai Nexo : Engine
The Hyundai Nexo‘s 95-kW fuel cell stack and 40-kWh battery pack power an electric motor with 161 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. The engine drives the front wheels through a single-speed transmission, all-wheel drive is not available. In our testing, the Nexo went from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, faster than the Mirai. The acceleration figure also puts the hydrogen-fueled Hyundai on par with conventional, gasoline-powered compact crossovers. As with its fuel cell competition, the Nexo isn’t exciting to drive. Its electric power steering is suitably tuned, though; It feels light but stable. In our testing, the Nexo stopped from 70 mph in 169 feet; This is much better than the Toyota Mirai sedan.
Cruising range varies by equipment, with a full load of 14 pounds (41 gallons) of compressed hydrogen in three tanks, a base Nexo Blue going an estimated 380 miles. Added equipment and 19-inch wheels on the Limited (compared to the Blue’s 17s) drop the estimated range to 354 miles. The EPA’s MPGe ratings are slightly different between the two Nexo trims. Hyundai also offers owners free rental cars seven days a year for long trips, Nexo gets 61 MPGe (65 city/58 highway), while the Limited trim is rated at 57 MPGe (59 city/54 highway).
2025 Hyundai Nexo : Safety
Every Nexo includes a forward collision avoidance system with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Limited adds a blind-spot camera display in the instrument cluster. Nexo’s crash test results will be available on the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Key safety features include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist.
