Mercedes offers the S-class sedan with a 429-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine in the S500 or a 496-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine in the S580. Both powertrains come with a 48-volt hybrid system and are mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and 4Matic all-wheel drive. The S580e plug-in hybrid uses an inline-six and an electric motor to produce 510 horsepower, all-wheel drive is standard here as well.

The S-class sedan and put our test equipment through each model, all of which deliver impressive acceleration. At our test track, the six-cylinder S500 hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the plug-in hybrid S580e did it in 4.2 seconds, and the V-8-powered S580 managed a time of 3.9 seconds. The EPA estimates that the S580e’s electric range should be 46 miles, giving it a long-head advantage before its inline-six wakes up. But it managed 58 mph in the test, which is 14 miles faster than any PHEV we tested last year.

We tested the latter on our 75 mph fuel economy route, part of our extensive testing range, where we got 32 mpg on the highway, beating the EPA estimate by nearly 10 mpg. Meanwhile, the S580e plug-in hybrid managed 36 mpg during the same test after its battery died.
