Rivian
Rivian Automotive, Inc. is an American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer that focuses on adventure-oriented electric trucks and SUVs. The Rivian company was founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe and is headquartered in Irvine, California. Rivian aims to develop sustainable transportation solutions with a focus on off-road capabilities and long-range performance.
Rivian flagship models—the Rivian R1T pickup and Rivian R1S SUV—Rivian has carved out a niche in the growing EV market, offering rugged performance, cutting-edge technology, and premium design. Rivian, Inc. started as a stealth EV startup before pivoting to adventure-focused electric trucks and SUVs. After acquiring a former Mitsubishi factory in Illinois, Rivian unveiled its first models, the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, at the 2018 LA Auto Show. Major investments followed, including $700 million from Amazon and $500 million from Ford in 2019, with Amazon ordering 100,000 electric delivery vans (EDVs).
Rivian went public in 2021, raising $13.7 billion in one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history. Rivian has faced production challenges, supply chain disruptions, and financial pressures. Looking ahead, Rivian is expanding its lineup with the more affordable R2 series, developing its charging network, and scaling production to compete with Tesla, Ford, and GM in the growing EV market.
